Root-Zone Oxygen Diffusion

What oxygen diffusion is

Oxygen diffusion is the movement of oxygen from the atmosphere into the root zone and toward respiring roots.

It occurs primarily through air-filled pores, not water.


Factors affecting oxygen diffusion

  • Air-filled porosity
  • Pore connectivity
  • Bulk density and compaction
  • Water saturation duration
  • Root respiration demand

Why diffusion matters

Even if oxygen is present at the surface: - Poor diffusion limits supply to deeper roots - Roots may suffocate in wet but oxygen-poor media


Symptoms of poor oxygen diffusion

  • Wilting despite adequate moisture
  • Root browning or blackening
  • Reduced nutrient uptake
  • Increased susceptibility to root pathogens

Agronomic note

Root-zone oxygen stress is often misdiagnosed as nutrient deficiency or disease.
