Zinc (Zn)

Role in plants

Zinc is required for enzyme function, auxin metabolism, and protein synthesis. It supports internode elongation and leaf expansion.

Deficiency symptoms

  • Small leaves, shortened internodes (“rosetting”)
  • Interveinal chlorosis in young leaves
  • Poor growth and delayed maturity
  • Common where P is excessive or pH is high

Toxicity symptoms

  • Chlorosis and growth suppression
  • Root damage
  • Induced iron/manganese deficiency

Natural sources

  • Parent material and clay minerals
  • Organic matter complexes

Fertiliser sources

  • Zinc sulphate
  • Chelated Zn products

Plant uptake forms

  • Zn²⁺
