Zinc (Zn)
Role in plants
Zinc is required for enzyme function, auxin metabolism, and protein synthesis. It supports internode elongation and leaf expansion.
Deficiency symptoms
- Small leaves, shortened internodes (“rosetting”)
- Interveinal chlorosis in young leaves
- Poor growth and delayed maturity
- Common where P is excessive or pH is high
Toxicity symptoms
- Chlorosis and growth suppression
- Root damage
- Induced iron/manganese deficiency
Natural sources
- Parent material and clay minerals
- Organic matter complexes
Fertiliser sources
- Zinc sulphate
- Chelated Zn products
